This next feature is a classic story of how Street culture coincides with the Sneaker community. Carlitus “Dreadz” Christensen Sr. is 36 years old, married and a father of four sons. He currently resides in Long Island, NY. Carlitus grinds day in and day out at his own company, INI Motorwerks, which specializes in German auto tuning.
Carlitus has always been unintentionally in the shoe game. Rockin’ hot sneakers and dressing fresh is part of his lifestyle. He puts it like this, “When you live in the projects, it’s normal to want to be fresh.” And, he’s right. The majority of people living in NYC inner city live by the same unwritten rule.
Going back to 1988, Carlitus has “always been a Nike & Jordan head.” He actually hasn’t worn anything ever since. The loyalty to his favorite brand has even trickled down to his wife and children.
In the early 90’s, Carlitus strictly bought only J’s. Eventually, he began to switch it up a bit in the mid 90’s. From J’s to AF1′s, he started sporting all types of flavor.
Nowadays, Carlitus prefers to cop what he likes rather than getting caught up with the hypebeasts. And, all jokes aside, he hit the nail on the head with his comment, “A person like me can make anything FRESH!” That’s straight swag – Style and confidence speaks for itself.
Often times, Carlitus reminisces about the culture. He thinks it’s dope and surreal at the same time to see Sneaker culture mature throughout the years. He says, “Back in the day, you stacked boxes to show how fresh you were to chicks.’’
Carlitus says he would never buy a pair of kicks if he wasn’t going to rock ‘em. As far as his favorite kicks – “I can’t say. It changes daily.” One aspect of the culture that Carlitus would like to change is to shut down all of those fugazi sellers in the market.
